Michael Mommersteeg 1961 — 2024
Our courageous friend Mike lost his battle to cancer, December 11, 2024. His condition was discovered in late March of 2022 and it brought on a radical lifestyle change for Mike. After being an owner/operator for almost all of his adult life, Mike was forced to sell “Betsy” so that he could concentrate on regaining his health. After multiple surgeries and two rounds of treatment had virtually no positive effect, Mike was given a relatively short survival timeline with further treatment, and half of that if he decided not to accept medication. After research into the side effects and the expected quality of life, Mike opted to forego further treatment and face his fate head-on. In February of 2024 Mike said that he was feeling so good that he wanted to return to the road and carry-on with what he loved to do, for as long as he could. After a year away from it, Mike learned how to use an e-log, hopped into company truck #5 and went back to work! Although it served as a distraction, Mike also wanted to put away as much as possible for his family, Susan and her children’s future without him. In September Mike’s condition started to slip and by early October, with true professionalism, he deemed himself unable to safely stay out on the road. Sadly he spent his last couple of weeks in excruciating pain and was finally mercifully released from it in the late afternoon, surrounded by his loved ones and best friend. We will miss Mike greatly and the example of pride that he set in everything that he did.
His unit #22 will be respectfully retired.
Donald “Don” Henry George Scheffler 1957 — 2019
On August 3rd 2019 we lost a good friend and valued member of our family at Lucas Refrigerated Transport.
Don Scheffler suddenly passed away at his home while performing a maintenance task on his truck, something that was routine for him and one of his many strengths. His attention to detail and level of professionalism with his own, and our equipment were only parts of what made him an exemplary operator. His ability to deal with co-workers, suppliers and customers were an even larger component of his character. Although he had only worked with us for 2 years, a few of us were lucky enough to have known Don for decades, and in some cases all the way back to the days Kenbrent Refrigerated Express. Don will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
His unit #36 will be respectfully retired.
